The Green Schools
For the past two years, Ms. Curtin, as coordinator and 3rd and 4th class as the committee, worked tirelessly to achieve the Green School Flag – Water Theme. With seven steps involved, they focused on the importance of water, using clean water and being economical with usage. The committee informed the classes of the theme and used their input to improve our school’s usage. They hung up signs and posters to create awareness around the school and also reminded the classes to maintain our Litter and Waste and Energy themes.
It was a joint school community effort with parents and staff getting onboard. Classes integrated the theme of Water into English, SESE, SPHE and Art.
We created a Green Code – “Don’t let water run – It’s not a race.” and our Green School Poem was composed by the 4th Class girls.
“Tell the tap to shut its trap, It’s leaking everywhere. I will call the plumber so you better beware. The plumber will come and fix you, You won’t leak anymore. So then there won’t be water leaking underneath the door.”
Our Green-Schools Review Visit with Environmental Awareness Officer, Breda Moriarty, took place on Wednesday, 18th March. The committee confidently presented the seven steps of the programme and showcased our Green-Schools notice board, impressing Breda with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

In April, we were delighted to be shortlisted as a Water School of the Year, recognising the outstanding work completed on our water theme. We will receive a trophy and a cash donation to mark this achievement.
We are also thrilled that our Green Flag application was successful, and we will receive our flag in early June.
Both award ceremonies will take place in Dublin and Cork, with four committee members attending each. We look forward to celebrating these achievements with our whole school community.
